Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry Essay Example For Students

Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry Essay Having read the novel, I have come to the conclusion that the author, Mildred Taylor has portrayed prejudice in a number of effective ways. The novel being set in 1930s Mississippi plays a major role in prejudice being apparent because slavery had just been abolished, yet this didnt have much of an impact on the society in the 1930s. Through the use of various examples, the reader is able to comprehend the prejudice at the time and the effects it had on people. The main theme running in this novel is related to prejudice and therefore all incidents that take place in the novel occur due to prejudice being present. The time it was set in is a huge impact on the prejudice itself as the Wall Street crash had just taken place and therefore, poverty was at its peak. This incident was an excuse characters, such as the Wallaces, had used to blame the whites as being those who put them in the position they were in and if the white race didnt use so many resources at the time, then the Wallaces would have been better off. Mildred Taylor has made the novels narrator a youth of the black race and also uses first narrative, which has a greater effect on the reader as they are being shown racism and prejudice, through the eyes of a nine year old child. In the majority of novels, the authors show the novel from an adults point of view in this case we are shown a youths reaction towards incidents experienced at the time, hence the reader gains a greater insight. It allows the reader to engage in the novel by seeing how a child explores the prejudice in Mississippi. Taylor gradually builds up tension in the novel by showing the reader certain details of a familys status and then shows how they may be exploited due to the way they are seen in society. We are shown this when Cassie asks Papa why he had to go to work and why the land was of such significance. Papas response was reassuring, as he told Cassie that she may not find it easy to comprehend at that moment, but as time passes she would become aware of Papas need to travel to work and what significance the land was to the Logans, as we see she later does. Mildred didnt show how owning land was a great virtue at the time; instead she went on further to show examples of how racism and prejudice increased due to the black race owning land. Mildred shows Mr Grangers actions of trying to get the Logan Land back into his possession which shows how a white man, felt the need to take over a black mans belonging. In order for Mildred to show the reader the long-term effects of the black race owning land and how it would result in the whites opposing them, due to them not approving of the blacks owning such land as it would give them a higher status in society, we are shown a question asked by a black youth, Cassie -I asked him once why the he had to go away, why the land was so important.

Open Adoption vs. Closed Adoption free essay sample

Many children are adopted each year, and with these children being adopted there are adoptions. There are many forms of adoption used throughout the world, but the biggest forms of adoption are closed adoption and open adoption. Open adoptions are adoptions in which the birthmother, the biological mother of an adoptee, is allowed contact with the adoptee. Closed adoption is an adoption where the birthmother of the adoptee is not present in the child’s life in any way shape or form. The birth family is completely cut off and cannot give or receive any information regarding their welfare or the adoptee’s. Closed adoptions are a better option than open adoption and should be mandatory because it would prevent confusion the child may face, allow children to actually fit into their adoptive family, provide privacy and closure and protect families from unstable birthparents. Having multiple sets of parents creates confusion in a family, and mostly for the child. We will write a custom essay sample on Open Adoption vs. Closed Adoption or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page â€Å"Adoption was created out of the recognition that children need to feel secure about who their parents are and what their parent’s role is† (Harnack 84). This is what’s best for the child in most if not all adoptions. The child needs to know who exactly is their parent, not a birthparent but the adoptive parent. Adoptive parents are permanent and a child may not grasp that idea with a tentative parent; the birth parent. When a child does not know who their parent is, it creates trouble. The child may even seek out trouble. Children are developing and such an unstable family creates really harsh developmental issues within the adoptee. All children need to know who their parents are and be able to trust that their parents are not going to leave them. Having a birth parent around makes things difficult for everyone, but most importantly the adoptee. The adoptee may have a reduced ability to assimilate into family-Interaction with the birth family may make it harder for the child to assimilate into the adoptive family† (â€Å"Open Adoption: Disadvantages†). This is one of many examples of how adoptive families are not as whole and full as they could potentially be because of problems wit h the birth parent. The feeling of rejection from a birthmother can seriously impact the intellectual growth and development of an adoptee. A recent interview of an adoptee provided more evidence and demonstrated how the privacy provided with a closed adoption would give the adoptive parents more closure. The fourteen year old adoptee learned about her closed adoption ten years ago when she was four, her parents wanted to wait to tell her until she was eighteen but the adoptee found out through another family member. So then the adoption became open allowing the adoptee contact with her birth mother. â€Å"Now,† said the adoptee â€Å"I speak with my birthmother more than I do my mom† (Anonymous). Her birthmother being a big part of her life, the adoptee is losing her relationship with her adoptive parents. Her adoptive parents feel that if the birthmother wasn’t so intrusive in their lives that they would have a better relationship with their daughter. This is why the closure and privacy involved in a closed adoption is so critical. Although there are so many benefits in a closed adoption some people still argue that open adoption is not completely the worst option in some cases. Among those arguing are adoptees who develop clinical illnesses in their lifetime. One thing a doctor may ask when a patient is diagnosed with a disease is for medical history. An adoptee in a closed adoption does not have access to their medical history, that information is sealed at a court house as with the contact information of the birthfamily. In some cases the birth family is contacted and refuses to give up the vital information that would be beneficial in the treatment of a patient. â€Å"When an adoptee is denied medical information†¦ he may feel like and adult who has no rights whatsoever† (Eldridge 269). An open adoption would ensure a medical history and prevent the scandal of being without, but this positive factor of open adoption does not outweigh the benefits of the closed adoption. One of those benefits includes escaping the risk of â€Å"an unstable birthparent [who] could cause problems† (Adamec). Many times adoptions occur because the birthparent is unsuited to raise the child. This includes birthparents who abuse drugs, are unemployed or even felonious. Unstable birthparents provide bad examples for adoptees and much of the time influence adoptees. Children have very malleable minds; this is why it is so easy for children to learn. They pick up traits and learn bad habits through the time they spend with their birthparents. There have also been worse cases, for example there are cases where birthparents kidnap the adoptee. The adoptive parents and the adoptee should never have to face the stress or trauma an unstable birth parent would cause. Open adoption has become conventional, almost a standard for adoptions. Closed adoptions are almost unheard of in this day and age. One would think with all the benefits of a closed adoption it would be the standard, but such is not the case. Closed adoptions are a better option because it helps adoptees to actually fit into their adoptive family, helps prevent confusion in an adoptee, provides privacy and closure, and protect the adoptive families from unstable birthfamilies. Pepperoni in Italian Is Not the Same as in English

Pepperoni in Italian Is Not the Same as in English Its one of the most common mistakes Americans make when referring to food in Italy. The New York Times article, Savoring Tuscany a Glass at a Time, opens with this (un)appetizing line: If the idea of wandering through a village dating back to Etruscan times before stopping off at a family-run restaurant for a plate of pollo con pepperoni (chicken with peppers) and a glass of Chianti sounds good to you. Heres the Twist Well, no, in fact, that doesnt sound right at all! Pepperoni is a spicy Italian-American variety of dry salami usually made of pork and beef and is frequently used as a pizza topping in American pizzerias. Peperoni, on the other hand, is what Americans recognize as peppers, and what the recipe calls for. Chicken surrounded by those large circles of pepperoni one normally associates with take-out pizza on a Friday night? No thanks! The plate should read pollo  con peperoni, with one P. The Best Advice For those traveling to Italy who want to sample authentic pepperoni, ask for salame piccante, salamino piccante (spicy salami, generally typical of Calabria), or salsiccia Napoletana piccante, a spicy dry sausage from Naples.

Ikea uses SWOT analysis to reach its objectives. Strengths and Weakness are internal factors of the business. They are controlled by within the business. Opportunities and Threats are external factors, which are outside the control of business. The expansion of the business always creates difficulties to maintain the standard of quality and customer satisfaction. Its also difficult to keep environment healthy for a large organization. Ikea has the business in more than 35 countries. Supply products with same good quality are hard for them. Ikea must keep communication to suppliers and consumers to maintain the standard of business, for a large business is not easy. As a business of furniture and all household products made from the plastic, wood, glass, rubber, paper, chemicals, it is hard to maintain environmental standards. Ikea believe in low price and good quality. For that Ikea needs to differentiate how they can be chipper with a good quality than the competitor (Hartline, 2008) Do it your self-system: Ikea is believes in self-serve approach but some customers who earning more salary, may not like to go warehouse and picking out their furniture. Some customers may not have time to assemble their furniture once they get it home (Hartline, 2008) Opportunities: Ikea should use its strengths and brand name to take advantage coming opportunities in the world. Making environmental friendly products can be useful in price sensitive market. IKEA is developing effective solutions for customers in order to support them recycling or reusing used products, aiming at no products ending up at landfill and the recycled materials used in producing new IKEA products. (The Times 100) Ikea should produce more and more products from materials that can be recycled and should develop technology to reduce carbon footprints and use of water. Ikea should use more and more renewable energy so they can keep price low as much as they can and attracts the more consumers in current financial climates. By providing better customer services by their co-worker, by telecommunication or by media or taking opinion from peoples they can sustain in the market. Threats: By knowing the possible threats each and every organization can be prepare for better business strategy. Ikea should know the external and internal threats. Competitor: competitor consider as an external threats. Having with better business strategy like low price with better quality, better customer services, good communication with consumer and supplier (Hartline, 2008) Competitor can come with better technology edge. So to avoid this threat Ikea should be more adoptable (Hartline, 2008) Culture: Culture is also playing part as major threats. Ikea has a large business around the world where people with a different culture and different attitude. This culture can be changed by different methods like training programme, changing people or giving them satiable jobs, totally giving new structure or appearance (Pfeiffer, 1993) PESTEL analysis for Ikea Political: It is important to make number of observation regarding political changes in the world or country where you doing business because uncertainty of political environment could have massive impact on business (Britton, 2009). Changes in political environment also emanate from a countrys institutional arrangements (Britton, 2009). Ikea should analysis of political environment because each and every country has own rules. In some country political is very stable and providing good infrastructure for the business. Economic: Economical effects means any business organization concerned with imports or exports will be affected by many ways like taxation, interest rates, employment levels and Inflation, Economic condition of ones countries means spending ability of consumer force to change any organizations strategy and products services. In some countries you should concern about economic condition before starts the business. Business strategy should be fine according to countries economic condition so most of consumer can afford to buy your products (Craig, 2005) Ikea can achieve its vision to create a better everyday life for the many people by considering economic condition of countries. Sociological: Sociological effects means particularly any countrys demographic profile such as the increasing birth rate or decreasing death rate or unbalance in genders or increasing population can affect any business (Craig, 2005) To finds more flexible people just because of their geographical or social condition leads the shortage of skilled worker. This can pressurise organisation to move new location just to find out technological solution (Craig, 2005) Technological: Technological developments in recent years are significance. If you want to sustain in the market among the competitors you must have edge in technological improvement (Craig, 2005) Any organisation should be ready to adopt new technology. The business depends on how you marketing the product, which technology you are using for production and distribution and for storage (Craig, 2005) Environmental: Every country is very concern about their environmental condition. Change in climate for last couple of years just because of human activities has made aware everybody. To expand the business every organization should analysis of environment. (Britton, 2009) In every country requirement of products is always varies according to their environmental condition. Organisations required being in the leading position of making possible changes rather than coming from a catch-up position. Every organisation needs to respond to green issues are voiced by customers or community groups. (Robert Dransfield, 2004) Legislative: Legislation includes certain factors like employment law, taxation law, companys own law, health and safety law, patent law, industry regulations (Sinclair-Hunt, 2005). In business strategy you should concern legislation. Legislation is a part of business. Reducing union power was perceived as economically essential for freeing the labour market and hence rejuvenating the economy through the free play of market forces (Undy, 1996). Conclusion: As a worlds biggest retailers Ikea should counts numbers of thing to capture the maximum market among strong competitor. They should use more and renewable energy for their business to reduce the price of products and to reduce carbon foot-print. Ikea have good name around the world for their products with good price with good quality and to sustain the image they should know their internal and external threats and should try to come over. As a large business they should have good communication with suppliers and with consumers. By adopting latest technology they can be ahead of competitors. Using waste or damaged material they can produce product and can save environment.

Americas Cuban Conundrum

MARKETING 505 Assignment #2: Case 5-1 â€Å"America's Cuban Conundrum† ABSTRACT This paper analyzes the key issue that prompted the EU to take the Helms-Burton dispute to the WTO. It will decide who benefits and who suffers from an embargo of this type and it explains the rationale behind the conclusion. It also presents a resolution to the trade situation between the U. S. and Cuba. Finally given the trade relations it determines what type of economic barriers would have to be overcome by a U. S. firm to conduct business successfully in Cuba. Assignment #2: Case 5-1 â€Å"America's Cuban Conundrum† In 1996, President Bill Clinton signed the Cuban Liberty and Democratic Solidarity Act, also known as the Helms-Burton Act. The President’s actions came after Cuban MiGs shot down two U. S. civilian airplanes, killing the four Cuban-American who were on board. † (Green & Keegan, 2011) The Helms-Burton freezes the embargo against trade with and investment with Cu ba. It is a controversial act since it arouses a lot of negative attention on how the U. S. government is manipulating its power to impose its political views on other countries’ economies. The key issue -that prompted the EU to take the Helms-Burton dispute to the WTO -was mainly because they felt that it violated international rules dealing with trade. The EU had a dispute with the U. S. regarding testing agriculture, trade and investments and biotechnology issues which was brought to the attention of the WTO. It felt as if the United States was unlawfully exercising its jurisdiction extraterritorially, in that it was threatening to punish lawful activity such as trade, investment, and tourism carried out by the residents of independent countries. It is no exaggeration to say that U. S. olicy toward Cuba is now rejected and sharply criticized by the rest of the world. Other nations point out, moreover, that while America insists on maintaining its embargo and other pressures against Cuba because of the latter's human rights abuses, the fact is that Washington has close relations with–and extends Most Favored Nation treatment to–the People's Republic of China, Vietnam, Indonesia, and other states that are no more democratic than Cuba and have far worse human rights records, arguing that engagement, trade, and dialogue will do more to bring change in those countries than isolation. (Smith, 1998)It is obvious that the embargo affects a great number of people. To be all fair and neutral it would be necessary to highlight that to a certain extent, both countries are suffering and their benefits are minimal from this embargo. If it was to cease and somehow both countries came to an agreement and decided to put it all in the past and start from fresh, they would both benefit greatly. Production would increase and the producers on both countries would prosper. Cuban resources would be available to the U. S. Market and American producers would imp ort cost effective products that are not available in Cuba.An increase in capital from investors would make the economy run and prosper. A resolution to the trade situation between U. S. and Cuba represent the lifting of abolishment of the embargo. Castro’s regime and that of his successor, his brother Raul, have always talked a good anti-embargo but have not made the least effort to walk the talk, since this embargo may constitute the real reason of their continued hold on power since it gives an â€Å"antagonist† to the Cuban people, to the Cuban progress and it gives them an enemy to blame for the failure of Castro’s socialist revolution. In the U. S. there has been a lot of talk as well. President Obama was in favor of lifting of the embargo in 2004, ever since his views and actions changed, however he continued on implementing new policies that are in favor of establishing some type of relationship with the Cuban community. In 2004 President Obama who was th en a senator said: â€Å"I think it’s time for us to end the embargo in Cuba,† the then-Senate candidate said. And I think that we have to end it because if you think about what’s happening internationally our planet is shrinking, and our biggest foreign policy challenge — and it fits directly into the battle on terrorism and it fits into issues of trade and our economy — is how we make sure that other countries, in developing nations, are providing sustenance for their people, human rights for their people, a basic structure of government for their people that it’s stable and secure so that they can be part in a brighter future for the entire planet. And the Cuban embargo has failed to provide the source of raising standards of living and it has squeezed the innocents in Cuba,† Mr. Obama continued, â€Å"and utterly failed in the effort to overthrow Castro, who’s now have been there since I was born. So, it’s time for u s to acknowledge that that particular policy has failed. † (Speigel, 2009) But in 2008 he declared the opposite: â€Å"I will maintain the embargo,† Mr.Obama said in a speech in Miami on May 23, 2008. â€Å"It provides us with the leverage to present the regime with a clear choice: if you take significant steps toward democracy, beginning with the freeing of all political prisoners, we will take steps to begin normalizing relations. That’s the way to bring about real change in Cuba – through strong, smart and principled diplomacy. † (Speigel, 2009) For change to come about, a major event will have to take place. This situation seems like a non-negotiable on both sides where for the past 50 years they have agreed on disagreeing which isn’t the way to change the lives of all those people suffering and all those people that in one way or another are being affected negatively. In the unexpected event that trade relations resume between the U. S. a nd Cuba, some of economic barriers that would have to be overcome by a U. S. firm to conduct business successfully in Cuba.
